A Healthier Way

My journey to kiss adrenal fatigue goodbye
A friend asked me how I have made progress in my fight against adrenal fatigue. As I’ve thought back over the past few weeks and month...and years, I’ve seen one recurring thread: honesty and vulnerability.
First I had to be honest that there was a problem. When I confided in a good friend of mine she helped me see my symptoms as some thing to not just ignore and hope it will go away. Then I looked at the cause of where this is coming from. Generally speaking, our body, soul and spirit work together in very tight connection. I dove deep into my past to take a look at the good, the bad and the ugly. My husband listened to many of my tear filled attempts at verbally processing the the junk. I felt like I had to go through this step in order to embrace the “why”. I felt ashamed and weak for feeling the way I did. Revisiting my past gave me an understanding of the intense, prolonged stress I had been under and answered my cry of "why" I have fallen and can't get up.
In the middle of this soul searching I listened to the audible book, Turn on your Brain by Dr. Caroline Leaf who is a christian scientist and doctor. She shed a lot of light on how our minds and bodies work in tandem. I typed out and printed a bunch of scriptures about renewing our minds in Christ to read over and over and over till they became a part of me. A big part of my journey to healing was taking every thought captive. My brain was so full of STUFF, I needed to quiet it and live fully in every moment.
Next I ordered the adrenal fatigue protocol that my friend recommended for me by Dr. James Wilson. I faithfully took it every day along with drinking plenty of water. Within the first thirty days I had completely turned this train wreck around and was headed in the right direction. It was shocking how differently I felt in that short of time, taking the supplements and following these simple new habits for a restful lifestyle. https://adrenalfatigue.org/
General Rules for Adrenal Fatigue
Below I copy and pasted some rules from Dr. Wilson’s website to follow and things to avoid to help you recover from adrenal fatigue. The list he provides is more extensive, I simply am sharing the ones I found most helpful.
Do These Things:
Be in bed before 10:00 PM. (DO THIS if nothing else!) I found that being in bed by 10pm was a huge help. This is because your cortisol spikes again after 10 and it will be hard to go to sleep until after 1am.
Look for things that make you laugh. (enjoy your children)
Eliminate the energy robbers (things in your life that drain your energy. I had to put on hold the goals I had for my home business, plus I had to replace intense workouts that were actually harming me, for more gentle walking and bike riding)
Spend time in nature (going to the lake every day and soaking up the sun has been so healing for my soul and body)
Take your dietary supplements regularly. (don’t skip this!)
Use your mind as a powerful healing tool. (did you know your mind is the most powerful thing in the universe under God?)
Eat the foods your body needs. (Nourish your body. You are not a trash can, you are the temple of the Holy Spirit) Eat an abundance of whole foods – those foods which are eaten like nature grows them. (anything God made = meat, dairy, grains, fruits and veggies)
Learn which foods make you feel bad (keep a list) and avoid them. (I react badly to whey protein, white flour and mushrooms)
Try having a glass of water in the morning containing ½ to 1 teaspoon of salt stirred in until dissolved.* (I drink the THM singing Canary)
Make whatever lifestyle changes you need to make to regain your health. (I've found this meant not only simplifying my to-do list, but throwing the whole thing out till it no longer controlled me. And embracing a simpler lifestyle. I said no to so many social engagements and allowed my husband to swoop in and be a hero many times. Eg. He will change the car seats to the truck and back or will mow the yard. Things that are normally my job but I ask for help now. When I feel strong enough, then I joyfully pick up my sword. Don’t let Satan lie to you about “pushing through and being tough enough. That’s what got you here in the first place. ALSO, don’t let him lie to you about being “too weak and incapable” of participating in life. This is a tough line to balance, but you will know where that line is. The Holy Spirit is faithful to show you)
Enjoy your recovery. (adopt an attitude of rest and peace in your heart and mind. Don’t fight the process. But be ready to recognize when “Sam” is talking in your ear and take dominion over his lies.) (see previous post)
Avoid These Things
Getting overtired
Caffeine, sugar, alcohol, and white flour products
Pushing yourself
Energy suckers (people, places and things that make you feel worse or discourage your recovery)
Being harsh or negative with yourself
Feeling sorry for yourself
Never skip breakfast. (Intermittent fasting can be harmful while recovering from A.F.)
These are such basic, subtle changes that make a shift in the way you think. I have found that healing the mind is as important as healing the body. When I first recognized my body was tapping out on me, I chose to look facts in the face and move forward to find a solution. Never did I claim “adrenal fatigue” as my own. I do not HAVE adrenal fatigue. I am struggling to heal from, over-come and find a solution to adrenal fatigue. It is not mine to keep. We cannot stay and wallow in a spot till it becomes a hole we are stuck in. Everyone’s journey will look different and take a different amount of time. Embrace the journey, but please, please don’t stop there. Keep walking. And find a good support group or person to walk with you. You are not alone.
I'm still in the middle of this journey. Forging forward seeking knowledge and acting in wisdom. Submerge yourself in TRUTH and be healed.
Proverbs 4:20-22
My son (daughter) be attentive to my words, incline your ears to my sayings. Let them not escape from your sight, keep them within your heart. For they are life to those who find them, and HEALING TO ALL THEIR FLESH.
